This House would ban political advertising in the 60 days before an election.

Brazil, France, and the UK already restrict election-period advertising in various ways. The U.S. has the loosest regime in the OECD. Whether the U.S. exceptionalism is constitutional or just contingent is the live question.

Background

France bans all paid political ads on broadcast media for the 6 months before an election. The UK has restricted broadcast political ads since 1955 (party election broadcasts are free, allotted, and equally distributed). Brazil bans paid ads on TV and radio. The US protects political ads under Citizens United v. FEC (2010) and earlier First Amendment doctrine; a 60-day total ban would almost certainly be struck down. The constitutional carve-out is narrow; disclaimers, contribution limits, and platform-level voluntary policies (which Meta and Google have used) are the practical regulatory levers.
